Purpose of this Wiki Page[edit]

This wiki page is intended to be a resource for support engineers, designers, and technical sales to help find appropriate TI silicon to support their processor/controller/FPGA design. The examples in this section is contextual and may not address the needs of every design.

Introduction[edit]

This page supports the design of a USB End Device. A USB end device is somthing that would be conected to a USB host. This device could be a USB mass storage device, like a usb flash drive or hard drive, a humen interface device, like a mouse or keyboard, or somthing like the a USB to serial device. As shown in Figure 1 below, there are two main protection concerns for your USB port, ESD protection of the power and data lines and Overvoltage Protection (OVP) of the power lines. The ID data line present in mini and micro connectors is not shown in the block diagram but is also protected from ESD. ESD protection is important for both power and data connections because USB connectors are external and can come in contact with many different objects. The ESD protection must also have a low capacitance so that is does not interfere with USB high speed or super speed data rates. Over voltage protection is important to keep you device safe if it is connected to a malfunctioning USB port that has a Vbus outside of USB specifications (5V±0.25V). Suggested part numbers are also highlighted in the block diagram below, as well as a list of possible alternative part numbers.
