MSP430 Advanced Debugging using CCSv5

Introduction[edit]

MSP430 devices include an on-chip debug module called Enhanced Emulation Module (EEM) which allow advanced debug features such as hardware breakpoints, watchpoints, range breakpoints, among others. The module provides different levels of debug features based on the device being used.

This page includes a video tutorial on how to use these debug features in Code Composer Studio v5. The examples used in the video are taken from Application Note "Advanced Debugging Using the Enhanced Emulation Module (EEM) with Code Composer Studio". It is highly recommended to first review the application note to have an understanding of the debug features and capabilities of each MSP430 family.

The projects used in the demo are created using the source code from that application note. They are targeted for MSP430F169. If you are using a different device, the code would need to be modified accordingly.

Opening and running the examples in CCSv5[edit]

  • Extract the MSP430_Debugging_Examples.zip file to a folder
  • Start CCSv5
  • Go to menu Project->Import Existing CCS/CCE Eclipse poject
  • Browse to the folder where zip file is extracted
  • The discovered projects will be listed, Select all the projects, check “Copy projects into workspace”, Click “Finish”
  • The projects are now in your workspace
  • Select a project and click on the bug icon or Debug As->Code Composer Debug Session (this will build and load the code). Note that code is for a MSP430F169
  • You can now use the debug features shown in the video
