Defining the workspace directory

The first thing CCSv4 asks is to define a workspace - a directory that holds all elements (projects, links to projects, possibly source code) used in the development.

• By default the workspace is created under the C:\Users\<user>\Documents or C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\My Documents directory, but its location is arbitrary.
• Every time CCSv4 is executed it will ask for the workspace directory. If you plan to use just a single directory for all your projects, just check the option Use this as the default and do not ask again. The workspace can always be changed later from inside CCSv4.

Licensing

1. Update as of Dec 2016 Download the CCSv4 full license from the link below. There are no restrictions in regards to time, code size, debug probe or target used.

2. Select Activate License and then click on the Browse button near the field Specify a license file.

3. Browse to the location where the license file was downloaded in Step 1 above. Click OK.

Old licensing information (Obsolete)

Choosing the license

CCS requires an active license, therefore the next step is choose which license will be used. There are a number of different license options in CCS, and the activation procedure for each is explained below.

• If CCS was provided with a development board, the license is already activated and this section can be skipped.
• If a license file (typically named <license.lic>) is already installed, CCS will detect it and this section can be skipped.
• If the license file is not recognized, locate which directory it is installed and follow the procedure listed in the step 9 and 10 in the Free Limited License procedure.

30-day evaluation license

The 30-day evaluation license enables the use of CCS right from the start, since it is activated directly on the PC.

• There's no need to have an active Internet connection
• CCSv4 is fully featured during the 30-day evaluation period
• The evaluation period can be extended for an additional 90 days. Check the Advanced topics section.
• To use a different license or extend the evaluation period you can go to Help --> Licensing Options

1. Simply select the option to Evaluate Code Composer Studio for 30 days and hit OK.

CCS will show the number of days remaining in the top toolbar:

Note: In some cases the 30 day evaluation option will not be available if:

• The 30 day evaluation period has expired for the current install
• There was once a previous installation of CCS that was activated with the 30 day evaluation period, and 30 days have passed. Note that the 30 period is still active even if CCS is uninstalled
• In all cases, there is the option to extend the evaluation license for an additional 90 days. Check the Advanced topics section.

Free Limited License

The Free Limited License allows the use of CCS to debug that allows using the low cost XDS100 emulators, emulation built onto standard EVM/DSP/eZdsp development boards or simulators.

• Requires an active my.ti.com account (one can be created instantly).
• Requires an active Internet connection

1. Select Activate License and then click on Use Free Limited License button at the license screen.

2. A message will appear with a summary of the process. Click Ok

3. A browser window will open with the my.ti.com log in page. After that, the myRegistered Software page will open with the details about the product to be activated, the license chosen and the Activation ID code. Click Next.

4. In this page enter the information about the PC where CCS is being installed: the HostID (the MAC address of your PC) and a name to it. The HostID can be found in the license screen in CCS, just above the Register button. Click Next.

5. The next page will contain the Terms and conditions for the license chosen. You have to accept them to continue with the activation. Click Next.

6. The next screen asks for the e-mail address where the license file will be sent. Check the address and click E-mail License

7. At last, the confirmation screen should appear.

8. Look in your inbox for two e-mails: myTI_license and myregistered_software in the subject.

• The myTI_License e-mail contains the license file. Save this file and unzip it.

9. Go back to CCS screen and click on Browse under Specify a License File. Point to the place where you unzipped the license file.

10. Restart CCS. The top bar should say (Licensed) instead of 30-day evaluation or Unlicensed.

Registered License

The activation process for a Registered License is very similar to the Free Limited License.

• Requires an active my.ti.com account (one can be created instantly).
• Requires an active Internet connection

1. Select Activate License and then click on Register button at the license screen.

2. Follow steps 2 through 10 as in the Free Limited License process, with the following difference in step 3:

• Locate and insert the Activation ID provided with your DVD software. Insert it in the myRegistered Software Validate screen as shown below:

Floating License

The Floating License allows sharing a pool of licenses among several PCs in a networked environment. It requires network connection, but not necessarily Internet (good for laboratories disconnected from the external world).

The process of activation is very similar to steps 9 and 10 of the Free Limited Evaluation. The only difference in step 9:

• Select the Specify a license server option and enter the Address and Port Number information for the floating license installed on a server.

The welcome screen

After the license process is finished, CCS will show the Welcome Screen and be ready to use.
