EZSDK Fast Boot

From Texas Instruments Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

Introduction[edit]

The purpose of this document is to guide you through the steps for fast booting the EZSDK with u-boot and kernel images on NAND.

Note! This guide assumes you have already followed the Quick Start Guide (QSG) for setting up your EVM and installing the Easy Software Development Kit (EZ SDK). If you have not done this yet, please do so now before continuing. You can find a hard copy contained with your EVM. Alternatively you can find the QSG PDF and various other documentation in the 'docs' directory of the EZSDK installation directory.

Throughout this document there will be commands spelled out to execute. Some are to be executed on the Linux development host, some on the Linux target and some on the u-boot (bootloader) prompt. They are distinguished by different command prompts as follows:

host $ <this command is to be executed on the host>
target # <this command is to be executed on the target>
u-boot :> <this command is to be executed on the u-boot prompt>

A number of steps need to be followed to get to a fast boot, each of which are mentioned below. These steps need to be followed one after another.

Enabling Fast Boot[edit]

Step 1: Flashing the u-boot and uImage to NAND[edit]

To flash the NAND with uboot and uImage, please follow the instructions at EZSDK Flashing NAND. Ensure that the boot mode is set to NAND.

Step 2: Changing the level of shell scripts in rcS[edit]

Once the board is booted, the scripts run levels can be changed to run level S by executing the commands which firstly removes the links from the other run levels and then add the link to the run level S. The scripts include the loading of hd firmware, matrix gui and pvr-init.

target # update-rc.d -f load-hd-firmware.sh remove
target # update-rc.d load-hd-firmware.sh start 01 S .
target # update-rc.d -f pvr-init remove
target # update-rc.d pvr-init start 02 S .
target # depmod -a

These commands loads the hd-firmware in the starting of runlevel S which will show splash screen containing the TI logo.

Results observed when enabling Fast Boot[edit]

On EZSDK 5.03.01.15, after enabling Fast Boot, the following results were observed.

Device Observed time for Splash Screen
DM816x Approximately 16 seconds
DM814x Approximately 22 seconds
