Welcome![edit]

Your new AM18x EVM Development Kit is a low-cost development platform designed to speed the development of high-precision applications based on TI's AM18x applications processors.

NOTE: AM18x parts are supported by two distinct kits:

  • AM1808 eXperimenter Kit. A lowest-cost solution that contains the baseboard and AM1808 SOM card. It is available from Logic, and brief product information is available here
  • AM1808 EVM Development Kit. This solution includes everything in the eXperimenter Kit as well as a AM1808 SOM card and a User Interface daughter board. It is available from Logic. Brief product information about the Logic kit is available here.

To receive a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) for an AM18x board, users should refer to Logic's RMA web site.

This Getting Started Guide focuses on the EVM Development kit. Users of the eXperimenter Kit users need to be aware that some information may not apply.

What's in this Kit?[edit]

The AM18x Development Kit includes:

  • EVM baseboard
  • AM18x SOM
  • User Interface (UI) daughter board
  • Logic software CD
  • TI software DVD
  • Serial (null modem) cable
  • Universal power supply
  • Ethernet crossover cable
  • USB A to mini-B cable

What's on the EVM Board?[edit]

The AM18x EVM board is actually a baseboard into which a number of daughter cards can be plugged to provide it with the desired functionality. See the Logic's Quick Start Guide that comes with the kit for more details on these boards. A summary is given below.

In addition to the providing a host for daughter cards, the baseboard provides the following:

  • RS232 serial debug port
  • Line-in/Line-out stereo 3.5 mm jacks
  • USB On-the-Go mini-AB port
  • USB host Type A port
  • RJ45 Ethernet jack with magnetics
  • Boot mode selector switch
  • General purpose user DIP switches (S2)
  • USB mini-B port (for on-board emulation)
  • SATA port
  • ARM/DSP JTAG emulation connectors

Each baseboard will be populated with AM18x System on Module (SOM) daughter card. The SOM provides a flexible way for a single baseboard to host a variety of processor configurations. In addition to the AM18x chip, the SOM cards also include:

  • 128 MB mobile DDR SDRAM
(Note: The SOM included in the eXperimenter kit is configured with 64 MB of mobile DDR SDRAM.)
  • 8 MB SPI flash
  • 10/100 Ethernet PHY

A UI card is included with the Development kit and enables additional peripherals, including:

  • LCD character display
  • EMAC RMII interface
  • Camera (image sensor)
  • Push button switches
  • UPP ADC/DAC
  • Parallel NOR flash memory
  • NAND flash memory
  • Video Port Interface (composite, S-Video)

What's next?[edit]

To get started evaluating the EVM Development kit and developing applications for the AM18x, begin by following this Getting Started Guide. It will step you through connecting the hardware, testing the software, and beginning to develop applications.

Please continue on to the Hardware setup for AM18x section of the Getting Started Guide.
