DM646x Complementary Products
Contents
Introduction[edit]
This page serves as a repository of Complimentary Devices that can be paired with the DM646x SoC when integrating the device into a system. The Complementary Products listed here serve a wide range of functions such as:
- Providing basic support functions for the SoC (power, clocking, etc.)
- Expanding the interface options beyond the on-chip peripherals
- Creating the link between the digital domains on the SoC to the system's analog/physical domains
The Complementary Products are organized into functional categories, with the goal of showing several options and their respective Benefits.
Analog Video Input[edit]
The DM646x includes a 8-/16-bit digital video input port (VPIF) that can be interfaced with a video decoder, or ADC, to bring analog SD and HD video into the SoC. Before bringing the analog video into the ADC, it is also necessary to run it through an anti-aliasing filter to restrict the bandwidth before sampling. Below is a sample of SD/HD video decoders and anti-aliasing filters that would be a good match for the DM646x. Also view the Video and Imaging Solutions Guide and the presentation "The INs and OUTs of the TI Video Interfaces" (Media:Dm vpif inout v2.pdf) for a comprehensive selection of complementary video products.

PCI and PCI Express[edit]
The DM646x includes a 32-bit, 33MHz PCI peripheral that conforms to PCI Specification 2.3 and can operate as both a master and slave interface. Adding a PCI-to-PCI Bridge on this interface can allow transactions to occur between masters on one PCI bus and targets on another PCI bus. In addition, a bridge can be used to overcome the electrical loading limits of 10 devices per PCI bus and one PCI device per expansion slot by creating hierarchical buses.
The DM646x SoC can also be integrated into a PCI Express (PCIe) system when used in conjunction with a PCI-to-PCIe Bridge. Below is a sample PCI-to-PCI Bridge and PCI-to-PCIe Bridge that would complement the DM646x.

Clocking[edit]
The DM646x requires both a 27MHz main clock and a 24MHz USB clock. While crystals can be paired with the internal oscillators to provide these clocks, an external clock generator/synthesizer can sometime be more cost effective. Clock generators/synthesizers can use a single crystal to produce many clock output frequencies using their internal PLLs. Not only can they source both the 27MHz main clock and 24MHz USB clock for DM646x, they can also provide the clock for other devices in the system such as the audio and video encoders/decoders. Below is a sampling of clock generators/synthesizersthat would complement the DM646x. Also view the Clocks and Timing Selection Guide for a comprehensive guide to clocking solutions from TI.
